Bring your Google Photos library

Start by downloading a copy with Google Takeout. Your Google Photos library stays where it is while you prepare the files.

  1. Choose what to export

    On a computer, visit Google Takeout and sign in to the Google account holding your photos. Deselect the other products, select Google Photos and review the albums or collections included.

  2. Request a one-time ZIP export

    Choose a one-time export, ZIP format and delivery by email download link. Pick an archive size that suits your computer’s available space. Google may create several archives.

  3. Download and extract every part

    Wait for Google’s email, then download all the archive parts you want to bring. Extract each ZIP on your computer before selecting anything in Memory Temple. Leave enough disk space for both the downloads and extracted files.

  4. Keep the JSON files together

    Retain the exported folder structure and accompanying JSON sidecar files. Do not delete or rename them before importing. Google puts some information that is not embedded in the original media, such as comments, in separate JSON files.

  5. Review storage and your selection

    When desktop imports are released, open the existing Memory Temple import area with your usual account. Select an extracted folder, review the files and check your remaining storage before starting. Repeat for other extracted folders if needed.

  6. Check the completed import

    Review the final import report and any skipped or unresolved items. Open representative photos and videos and check important dates against the exported copies. Keep the Takeout files and Google library until you are satisfied.

Take your time. Keep your copies.

For a large desktop import, keep the browser open and the computer awake. Closing the browser or letting the computer sleep stops progress; uploading does not continue in the background.

If interrupted, return to the import area and reselect the same source files or folder. The source must be checked before saved progress can be reused.

Review available account storage before starting. Check the completed import report and open representative originals before deleting any source copies. There is no need to rush this last step.
